The carbon footprint of scientific visibility

چکیده

Abstract In the face of global warming, academics have started to consider and analyze environmental carbon footprint associated with their professional activity. Among several sources greenhouse gas emissions from research activities, air travel—one most visible unequal fractions this footprint—has received much attention. Of particular interest is question how travel may be related scientific success or visibility as defined by current academic evaluation norms, notably bibliometric indicators. Existing studies, conducted over a small sample individuals within specific disciplines, demonstrated that number citations air-travel frequency, but failed identify link between publication rate h -index. Here, using comprehensive dataset aggregating answers 6000 respondents survey sent randomly selected scientists staff across all disciplines in France, we show higher individual stronger This relationship robust inclusion effects gender, career stage, disciplines. Our analysis suggests flying means for early-career obtain visibility, senior maintain visibility.

Estimation of the Carbon Footprint in Dairy Sheep Farm

By 2050, the earth’s population is expected to be more than 9 billion. The need for secure food and water supply will force agriculture to increase production. The major greenhouse gases (GHGs) from the livestock sector are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) throughout the production process. These gases are the key contributor to an in...

Hydropower's Biogenic Carbon Footprint

Global warming is accelerating and the world urgently needs a shift to clean and renewable energy. Hydropower is currently the largest renewable source of electricity, but its contribution to climate change mitigation is not yet fully understood. Hydroelectric reservoirs are a source of biogenic greenhouse gases and in individual cases can reach the same emission rates as thermal power plants. ...

Measuring Caltech’s Carbon Footprint

The project deals with collecting data on greenhouse gas emissions on the Caltech campus. The emissions are categorized in 3 scopes. Scope 1 includes direct emissions, scope 2 indirect emissions from purchased water and electricity and scope 3 other indirect emissions. The data is used as an input in a Carbon footprint calculator, giving as an output a corresponding number of tons of carbon dio...
